Smiley Heart CookiesYesterday was my last opportunity to teach my 8th grade class about relationships using Jewish ethics and values as a guide.

As they’d finished playing the “Relationships” board game they constructed using the emotional development tools they learned about this semester, I realized that the book and curriculum never addressed self-happiness.

Topics included things like how the student(s) might feel if their boyfriend or girlfriend did something that made them happy, unhappy or frustrated, and how to appropriately interact with them under the circumstances, but not about how they felt about themselves.

So I ended the class with the following:  Don’t look to a boyfriend or girlfriend to “make you happy.”  If you make yourself happy, then what you seek in a partner will be the right thing: Someone to love through the ups and downs that make a life well-lived.
