Every Saturday and Sunday, if it’s not too cold or hot out, we enjoy taking our little poodle, Rhett, for a good, long walk, not because it improves cognition, but because we love it.
Last weekend, shortly into our walk, we came across an enormous downed tree, under which we had to crawl, and then found ourselves face-to-face with a little box turtle. My husband was thrilled, because he hadn’t seen any this spring or summer, and this one was actually kind of cute, with his pretty orange and black-painted shell. What a nice surprise!
As we continued walking, we came across two young deer. They each had tiny little horns, and seemed to gaze upon us as though we were alien creatures from another planet. Their curiousity and sweet brown eyes made me smile. As I type this, just thinking about them makes me smile.
After crawling over a second downed tree, we crossed the creek on large rocks, and met up with a nice big, fat toad. Toads aren’t particularly special, but my husband was thrilled because we “got a trifecta,” downed trees and all, having had the opportunity to see three different “wild animals” all in one little walk through the woods. They say fresh air will do you good, and this sure did.
