Every day, as a chaplain intern, I have the opportunity to sit with the residents at my nursing home and listen to their stories. Each and every one has so much knowledge and experience to pass on, that I find myself thanking the Heavens Above daily for the opportunity to be with them.
What’s most astonishing is that they don’t realize that merely by sharing their memories, they’re teaching me about who I am, and how grateful I am to them for their contributions. It’s such a powerful journey, that I’d recommend to everyone with elderly relatives and friends: (a) sit with them, (b) have them share their memories, (c) let them teach you about their legacy.
And don’t be surprised as you listen how much you’ll learn about yourself, about the endless possibilities that life has to offer, and about the power of letting love be your teacher.
