Chaplain Tamar’s God Story – No. 2 – Lover of Life

He was a centenarian

Considered himself a Jewish agnostic before he came to the assisted living facility

Had been married to a Jewish atheist

His soul mate

Until God gathered her to her kin in the heavens above

He’d lost most of his vision

Lost his ability to ambulate

Lost his son

His home

His independence

And amid all that loss

He discovered God

In the words he heard from those with whom he shared his day

In the gentle touch of his caregivers

In the aroma of every meal

In the gleam of the sunshine through his bedroom window

In the pitter-patter of the raindrops against the community room windows

In the rush of the wind between the buildings

And it was then that he realized

He was no longer a Jewish agnostic

He was actually a believer

in The One, The Only Almighty God

And from that moment on

He appreciated everything life had to offer

Every hug

Every voice

Every touch

Every scent

Every taste

And he reminded me of it every time I saw him,

So when I got the call

That he needed a pastoral visit

For his time on Earth appeared to be coming to its end

I went

And instead of asking for the Jewish prayers for the dying

He asked for a prayer for more time

So as we held hands to pray,

When he looked up, low-vision and all, and exclaimed,

“What’s my wife doing here? She’s been dead for years.

What’re my parents doing here? They’ve been dead for years, too”

Though it appeared that his loved ones had come to escort him

From This World to the Next

We prayed anyway

Just as he’d requested

And astonishingly the next day

When I went to his unit

There he sat

In the community room

In his wheelchair

Cracking his usual jokes

God had granted him just a bit more time

A little less than a month

But plenty long enough for him to share

With anyone he met

That God is Real

And that sometimes

(S)He does answer our prayers.
