That Final Journey “Home”

This past year as a hospice chaplain

I’ve discovered a pattern

In my hospice patients:

So many discuss trips

For which they’re preparing

In dreams they have before that final journey

One talked about having to set sail . . . his hobby had been sailing

Another was getting ready to lift anchor. . . he had been a Naval officer

Another talked about having to pack her bags and catch a cab . . . she had lived most of her life in New York

Another talked about the elevator that was coming . . . she had been a secretary in a high-rise office building

And yet another shared that her parents were waiting for her

On a subway platform,

One after the other appear to have been sent a message

From the other side

Letting each soul know it was time to get ready

Each soul was comforted

From their dream message

Because each dream was a gift

From the Other Side

Helping each and every one prepare

For that final journey “home.”
