Silver Linings

Silver Linings

Every day

As a hospice chaplain

I listen to people’s stories.

Some are wonderful people,

Some are not-so-wonderful;

But their life stories

Are all lined with life’s colors:

Gray for the sad memories

Blue for the spiritual ones

Yellow for the happy times

White for new beginnings

And silver

Inside every gray cloud.

It is strange how life works that way,

How inside of every terrible memory, lesson or experience

There is always some take-away

That makes us so grateful

So appreciative

For having gone through that terrible thing,

Either because we came away

More appreciative,

Or feeling blessed

Or because “it could have been worse.”

I hear it every day.

So it is no coincidence

That that which challenges us

Does so for a reason.

Let us strive to make it through those challenges

To the best of our ability

And seek out our life journey’s silver linings

So that every day

We learn to recognize

Our blessings.
